common objections to hiring a video marketer

The majority of the content consumed online today is VIDEO! Choosing to take advantage of that medium would be a SMART move for nearly every type of business. Still, there seems to be a number of recurring objections from business owners when it comes to hiring a video marketer. Here is a list of the most common objections I have encountered as a video marketer and my thoughts on each of them …

“We Can Do It Ourselves.” Some businesses believe they can handle video marketing in-house with smartphones and basic editing tools. While DIY videos are possible, professional video marketers bring storytelling, editing, and optimization expertise that significantly improve engagement and conversion rates. Professionally produced videos (regardless of whether they are short-form or long-form) have a higher probability of catching attention and garnering more sales than random and quickly edited videos.

“We Don’t Need Video.” Some industries or businesses think video isn’t relevant to their marketing strategy. Video is one of the most powerful marketing tools today. There’s a reason why MOST businesses today use video in their marketing  -  video increases conversions, builds trust with potential customers, and enhances brand awareness. Your competitors are likely using it, and your customers expect to see it.

“We Already Have a Marketing Team.” They might feel their current team can handle video production without hiring a specialist. A video marketer doesn’t replace your marketing team. Instead, they complement your existing team by bringing specialized skills in production, storytelling, and video SEO that general marketers might not have. The relationship between your marketing team and your video marketer should be a collaborative one, where the two of them come together as partners to 1) grow your brand’s presence and reach, and 2) increase your revenue by converting more prospects (that visit your website or social sites) into paying customers.

“We Tried Video Before, and It Didn’t Work.” It’s understandable that past failures can make companies hesitant to invest again. Previous failures could be due to poor strategy, targeting, or execution. A professional video marketer will analyze past efforts, refines the approach, and ensure better results with the proper distribution and optimization of future videos.

“Our Audience Prefers Other Content.” Some businesses believe their customers prefer blogs, podcasts, or other formats over video. While it’s true that some customers still enjoy blogs and podcasts, consumer behaviour (as a whole) has changed and people increasingly prefer video over text. Even if your audience currently engages with blogs or podcasts, video can complement and enhance those formats.

“Video Marketing Trends Change Too Fast.” Keeping up with trends like short-form videos, AI tools, and new social media platforms can feel overwhelming. A video marketer stays up to date with trends for you, ensuring your content remains relevant and effective without requiring your constant attention.

“We Don’t Have Enough Content Ideas.” Businesses may think they don’t have enough interesting material for consistent video content. They may actually have much more content ideas available than they realize. Not only can a video marketer help repurpose your existing content into engaging videos, they can also brainstorm fresh material in the form of testimonials, how-tos, behind-the-scenes, product demos, F.A.Q. videos, and more.

To conclude … none of the objections above are “crazy” or “out of left field.” The typical business owner has much more to deal with than just their marketing efforts, and it is understandable that video marketing can seem like simply another expense in a sea of expenses necessary to operate their business. I often encourage business owners to view video marketing as an “investment” - it is something that they should expect to see a return on after a certain amount of time has past and fine tuning has occurred. Since most of their competitors will be using video on their websites and social sites, they may as well be benefiting from this medium too.
